Amaja Oilfield Limited in Conjunction with Amaja Tubular Services Limited, a joint venture between Tenaris and Amaja, has renovated Axim Road Key Primary School in the Sekondi- Takoradi Metropolis.
Teachers and pupils of the school for more than a decade studied under frustrating conditions that did not support improved academic performance.
The renovation included the entire school building, the installation of two washrooms, three urinary sinks, and eight washing hand basins. A nine-capacity toilet facility was also renovated.
The company also installed a septic tank for all the washrooms. The two-meter overhead stand is capable of carrying a 10,000-liter tank.
The total cost of the renovation was estimated at ¢503,866 ($43,000). It was jointly funded by Amaja Tubular Services Ltd and Amaja Oilfield Ltd.
Fred Ocloo, General Manager of Amaja Oilfeild also representing Amaja Tubular Services stressed the importance and the commitment of the companies to the provision of quality education for their host communities.
“It is actually in line with our corporate social responsibility programmes and we try to identify the needs within the communities where we conduct our business and see the best how we can support them. Actually, every year we try to up the budget for the corporate social responsibility projects”.
“As an organisation, we try to add value to the communities in which operate, we go to the aid of the communities. As you can see, we have renovated this facility for them, we have also connected them to the national water grid and also provided the water storage tank for them. We expect the management of this institution will maintain these facilities so that the children can benefit”, he added.
The Headmistress of the school, Rita Adjowa Brenya, in an interview with Joy News, explainsed the demeaning condition under which studies were conducted.
"The old building was really affecting academic purposes because when it rained, we had to merge two or three classes".
She said that for the intervention by Amaja, every child will enjoy studies in his or her class.
"Even during this year's rainy season, each child was comfortably sitting in their class and studying. The years of merging classes are over ".
Madam Brenya described the intervention by Amaja as timely, adding, “Apart from renovating the dilapidated classrooms, they also provided a toilet facility and provided potable drinking water for the school which either there was none”.
"We are so grateful to Amaja for changing the narrative of this school, but just like I said like Oliver Twist we want more, like fencing of the school so encroachers will not disturb us”, she appealed passionately.
The Axim Road Key Primary School since it was built has not undergone any renovation work.
The building had developed deep cracks in the wall, windows and doors falling off, and concrete floors developing into holes among other challenges.
The project renovation begun in May 2023 and was completed in October 2023.
