The Ewe Association of Chicago, USA (Milenorvisi Group) has called on the Volta River Authority (VRA) to take steps to stop the flooding of communities downstream when excess water is spilled from the Akosombo dam.
The president of the association, Caroline Amexo, believes this would ensure widespread damages are not caused to households, livelihoods and investments.
She also advised the government and the VRA to develop more robust flood control measures to mitigate the impact of such disasters in the future.
This was Madam Amexo's message when her association presented some relief items worth GH₵33,000, through Ms. Della Russel Ocloo to flood victims in the Bakpa Awadiwo-Kome community in the Central Tongu District of the Volta Region.
Madam Amexo said the donation was the association’s contribution towards rebuilding the lives of the flood victims, many of whom have lost their homes, belongings, and livelihoods.
She added that a three member-committee made up of Dr. Faith Ababio-Twi, Davidson Zigah and Dzifa Hosi was constituted to identify victims in dire need for assistance at New Bakpa to benefit from their Emergency Relief Project.
She expressed the hope that the items would complement the efforts of other organisations that are working to help rebuild the lives of the affected communities.
“And we want you to know that we stand committed to helping you get back on your feet," she assured.
The Chief of Awadiwoe-Kome, Togbe Kwabla Sakpiti V, who commended the donors emphasized the need for the victims to be resettled as the entire community has been submerged by the flood, making it unsafe for habitation.
He said the residents would not be able to move there even after the flood water recedes considering the level of devastation.
