UCC’s Team Badwenba wins 2023 StatsBank Hackathon

The grand finale of the 2023 StatsBank Hackathon was an electrifying event that left no room for doubt about the power of data innovation.

Team Badwenba from the University of Cape Coast (UCC) emerged as the undisputed champions and their victory was nothing short of awe-inspiring.

Their journey to glory started with a vision – a vision of making a tangible impact on Ghana's future. Team Badwenba set out to develop a website that would revolutionize how policymakers identify districts in need of health and education facilities.

They used data from The StatsBank and various sources to highlight infrastructure needs, making it easier for decision-makers to allocate resources where they're needed most.

Their dedication paid off, and they left the audience in awe with their brilliant solution.

Not to be outdone, Team Data Geniuses, with their dazzling ICT access and usage visualization dashboard, took home the first runner-up prize.

Their work in data visualization was nothing short of exceptional, and they showcased the power of data in a way that left everyone astounded.

Team Robust Research, another talented team from UCC, secured the second runner-up position with their captivating geospatial analysis of school enrollment in Ghana.

Their dashboard shed light on the vital aspect of education, bringing a fresh perspective to the importance of school enrollment.

This spectacular event unfolded at Wesley Towers in Accra, where the air was charged with anticipation. The program was chaired by Joe Anokye, the NCA boss, and attended by esteemed dignitaries, including the government statistician, Prof. Samuel Annim, and his deputy, the board chair of the Ghana Statistical Service, Grace Bediako.

Present at the event were MPs Benson Tongo Baba and Zanetor Rawlings, and the Ambassador of Denmark to Ghana, Tom Norring.

Representatives from Statistics Denmark and Prof. Evans Aggrey-Darko, acting head of the Civil Service, graced the occasion with their distinguished presence.

As the curtains fell on the 2023 StatsBank Hackathon, it was evident that the future of Ghana is in capable hands.

The power of data, innovation, and collaboration has once again showcased its potential to transform the nation.
