The Public Relations Director of the Ghana Police Service, DSP Kwesi Ofori, has refuted claims that the Ghanaian security have been relegated to the background in the wake of US President Barack Obama’s visit.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Wednesday, he said providing security for such occasions have always been a collaborative, inter-agency effort between all the security agencies and the foreign partners.
There have been concerns largely in public discussions that Ghanaian security institutions and operatives have been sidelined in key activities involving the visiting US President and his wife, Michelle Obama from 10th of July to Sunday, 12 July, 2009.
Kwesi Ofori said the issue is not one of who is in charge but what is being done to ensure security is top-notch and that the planned events pass off successfully, explaining that several meetings to plan security for the occasion and which involved Federal Security Agents have been cordinated by national security.
The Police Service is posting a strong 10,000 men and women within Accra and Cape Coast for the occasion and Kwesi Fori said the police are determined to give of their best to ensure the visit is a successful and memorable one.
The police, he said, will be in charge of secuirty, escort, crowd control, traffic management and direction.
"It is a partnership, a collaboration between all the security agencies in Ghana and that of their American counterparts; so it is not a question of who takes control. In contemporary security issues it is the partnership and working as a team that matter but not a single organisation to take centre stage."
