As part of continuous engagement for peaceful elections, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) met the President of Liberia George Manna Weah a day before the country’s election.
The meeting was held behind closed doors.
It comes in the wake of heightened tension following the killing of two people in a clash between the Coalition for Democratic Change and All Liberia Coalition Party on Sunday.
All twenty candidates in the Liberian election have re-committed themselves to a peaceful poll.
The Economic Community of West African States is expecting the political parties to ensure their supporters abide by the electoral rules.
Prof. Jega leads the ECOWAS Observation Mission explains, “there have been concerns about some utterances by some candidates. We have used the opportunity of the interaction that we have had with these candidates to urge for a recommitment and revalidation of the peace declaration."
Liberia continues to struggle with security due to inadequate personnel and logistics.
Prof. Jega says arrangements have been made to beef up security for the election.
“Even though there have been challenges with the adequate number of police, they have made an arrangement where they will get complimentary staff from other security agencies to post to each polling unit”, he said.
He added that “they have methodology of rapid deployment if the need arises”.
Already, arrangements have been made to ensure electoral materials are deployed on time.
