A showcase of sporting activities by Maarif International School, Ghana, is slated to take place at the premises of the school as part of the maiden annual sports week celebration from 12th October,2023 to 13th October, 2023.
Pupils from Pre–school, Primary, Lower and Upper Secondary are to participate in different games including tug–of-war, rugby, athletics, soccer, sack race, table tennis, dance and singing competition.
Beyond these games, there is an intentional effort to revive both Turkish and Ghanaian local games.
Sports is a major tool for national unity and social cohesion in every society, Ghana is a dominant sporting force on the continent and boasts enviable exploits particularly in football and boxing.
With four trophies won in the African Cup of Nations and Gold Medals in the Under 19 and under – 20 world Cup, Ghana is among the elite clubs of football powerhouses in Africa.
The maiden sports celebration week introduces a traditional Turkish board game like Okey and Backgammon ‘Tavla’. A large part of these games are the ones that have been played widely in wide geographies.
Ghanaian traditional local games will also be given a substantial place in the sports week celebration. Games that hold rich history of the Ghanaian culture, values and moral codes will be introduced. These games include Pilolo, Alikoto, Ampe, Oware, Ludo and Chaskele ‘Ghana-made cricket’.
Ghana is a home to many sporting activities. Football, boxing and athletics are among the most popular ones.
There are other relatively popular sports such as golf, cycling, volleyball and tennis. Growing up in a typical Ghanaian environment, one was most likely introduced to games like draft, oware or Ludu.
Traditional indigenous games in both Turkey and Ghana are such that they are rich in culture. Though it is peculiar to children and the youth, the elderly has its share in the game. Therefore, our parents and teachers will all have their fair share of our maiden sports week celebration.
