Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong has picked the number one spot in the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) latest round of balloting for its November 4, presidential primaries.
Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will be number 2 in the slot, while former Agric Minister Dr Afriyie Akoto is third and Addae Nimo will be the fourth candidate on the ballot.
The race started with 10 aspirants including; Kennedy Agyapong, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, Joe Ghartey, Kwadwo Poku, and Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto.
The rest were Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Francis Addai Nimoh, Dr Kofi Konadu Apraku, Boakye Kyeremanteng Agyarko, and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.
However, the Super Delegates Congress held on August 26 cut the number down to six with a tie between Addae Nimo and Boakye Agyarko.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia won the New Patriotic Party (NPP) super delegates conference with a total of 629 votes, representing 68.15% of the total valid votes.
Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong came in second with 132 votes, or 14.30% while former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen placed third with 95 votes, or 10.29%.
Eventually, Mr Agyarko withdrew from the race saying he wanted to save the NPP the cost of conducting another election between him and Mr Addae Nimo.
Alan withdraws from race
Flagbearer aspirant Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen withdrew from the party’s presidential race.
He announced this decision in a statement dated September 5, 2023, in which he catalogued a number of incidents he said occasioned the party’s Super Delegates Conference.
He had early on cancelled a scheduled press conference to address the nation on his political future.
Modalities
Speaking at the balloting on Wednesday, September 13, the Chairman of the NPP Presidential Election Committee, Prof Mike Oquaye, said the candidates have all been briefed on the dos and don'ts in the upcoming election.
