The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has officially suspended their strike action, effective from Tuesday, September 5, 2023.
President of the Association, Prince Obeng-Himah in an interview on JoyNews’ AM Show, on Tuesday, September 5, admitted that the Association has decided to put a hold on their strike.
He stated, “The latest development is that we have called off the strike action, and it follows the directives given by the National Labour Commission last Wednesday, asking us to call off the action."
Mr Obeng-Himah further disclosed that CETAG complied with the NLC’s directives because they had been assured that the NLC “had compelled the government to provide evidence of a full compliance: bringing timelines or providing them with timelines when those that are yet to comply be complied.”
“So, some of them are processes; per the opinion of the National Labour Commission, we have to call off [the strike] so that the responsibilities of ensuring compliance will then be carried by the National Labour Commission,” the president of CETAG further added.
He emphasised that although they did not fully agree with the ruling by the NLC, they allowed all members of the Association to vote on whether or not CETAG should comply with the instructions of the NLC.
According to Mr Obeng-Himah, “After successful voting within the 46 colleges of education in Ghana, the majority overwhelmingly decided that we have to comply with the NLC directives,” hence the suspension of the strike.
He then assured that members of the association are expected to resume work today, while the full complement of staff has been given up to Thursday to resume their duties.
Additionally, Mr Obeng-Himah revealed that all the accrued arrears on their conditions of service allowances have been paid.
But he also raised that government is yet to implement some other three conditions that were given by the Association.
CETAG has explicitly stated that they will be diligently tracking government’s progress in implementing all the Arbitral Awards.
If government fails to meet these responsibilities by October 31, CETAG has reserved the right to review its position and take appropriate action.
