A senior police officer, Superintendent George Asare who was allegedly involved in the leaked tape discussing a a plot to replace the current Inspector General of Police, IGP, has revealed that his meeting with Daniel Bugri Naabu, former Northern Regional Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) had nothing to do with politics.
According to him, he was invited by Bugri Naabu to discuss a possible replacement of the current IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, but had nothing to do with politics.
“The meeting that we had with Chief Bugri Naabu had nothing to do with politics, at all,” he said.
Speaking before parliament’s ad hoc committee investigating an alleged plot to remove the IGP, which meeting he was involved in, he stated that politicians are not bad people and there is nothing wrong having conversations with them.
However, having a discussion with a politician does not necessarily make a conversation political.
“Chief Bugri Naabu invited me that I should meet with him, unless somebody tells me if a politician asks you of your name you shouldn’t even answer, politicians are our brothers, they’re our friends and some of them are our mates,” he explained.
Daniel Bugri Naabu appeared before the committee on Monday, August 28, 2023 and admitted that he recorded the conversation about the plot to remove the IGP and he did that to safeguard the interest of his party [the NPP].
Mr Naabu, who confirmed the authenticity of the secret tape, indicated that his plan was to forward the tape to President Akufo-Addo to take action but unfortunately the tape got leaked into the public space and led to a lot of controversies.
Following public reaction, Parliament set up the committee, chaired by the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta-Akyea, to delve into the issue.
The panel has the mandate to investigate both the authenticity of the leaked tape and the intricate allegations that have captured the nation’s attention. It is to submit its report on September 10.
