The Director-General of Operations for the Ghana Police Service, COP Alex Mensah, has accused the Inspector General of Police, George Akuffo Dampare of causing the recorded conversation between some senior police officers and former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bugri Naabu to be leaked.
This information, according to him, was gathered by his intel.
COP Mensah alleges that the IGP also masterminded the recording of the meeting.
He added that the IGP “sent some people to do it [record the conversation] after which he went for it.”
“So the tape, according to my intel is with the IGP and he caused it to be leaked,” he made the claim when he made his second appearance before the committee tasked to investigate an alleged plot to remove the IGP on Friday, September 1.
He therefore asked the ad-hoc committee to contact the IGP for the full original tape.
His comment was in response to a question by the Chairman of the Committee, Samuel Atta Akyea whether COP Alex Mensah had the complete tape since he raised issues of the tape being incomplete.
Asked whether he verified the intel, COP Mensah called for an in-camera hearing.
Background
On July 25, the Speaker of Parliament named Abuakwa South MP, Samuel Atta-Akyea as the chairperson of a 7-member ad-hoc committee to probe the recently leaked controversial audio in which voices are heard clandestinely plotting to oust the Inspector General of Police.
The viral audio, which revealed a supposed conspiracy by a senior police officer and a leading member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare from office, resulted in a debate on the floor of Parliament with the Minority calling for a forensic audit.
Subsequently, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin proposed the setting up of the Special Committee.
Mr. Bagbin asked the committee to submit its report by September 10, 2023.
