The National Peace Council of Ghana has stated that no victim of violence in senior high schools has made a report to the council.
Conversations about corporal punishment and bullying have found their way into the public space in recent times following a few cases that have received widespread attention.
Speaking on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning, the Gender Officer of the National Peace Council of Ghana, Semefa Asimenu, confirmed that although the Council has spotted such incidents on social media, no one has come forward to make an official report.
For now, the Peace Council, we’ve not received any complaints, but we’re aware these things happen," she told Asieduwaa Akumia on Wednesday.
However, as part of their sensitization and mandate, the Council organises forums at various schools periodically to encourage victims to be bold and report culprits.
That notwithstanding, she mentioned that the Council has plans to collaborate with the Ministry of Gender and the security service in order to handle any case that the Council may receive.
"As and when we receive complaints, then we would have to collaborate with the Ministry of Gender; they have a department for that and the Ghana Police Service unit for gender-based violence, so we deal with them," she noted.
From 2019 to date, videos of SHS students reportedly assaulted by their school authorities or colleague students, have surfaced on social media.
The most recent incident involves the Headmaster of Academics at the Nkwatia Presby Senior High School in the Eastern Region, allegedly slapping a female student of the school, leaving her with a bruised eye.
The National Peace Council says it has plans to initiate clubs in all schools to help in curbing this canker.
