From an early age, we are taught that clean eating is essential for a healthy life, which is one hundred percent true. The fact is if you eat nutritious food, you will experience an overall better quality of life but if you consume a lot of junk food, you will develop health problems.
While nothing can contradict this truth, there are still more benefits that lie in being mindful about what you do right before and after meals.
Chances are you are guilty of at least one of these not so good habits after chowing down your dinner. Here are some post-meal habits that could be secretly affecting your health and productivity.
Going to bed immediately
It is a fact that many of us hit the sack right after a meal. Sometimes we’re tired after a long day and the only thing we want to do is just get some rest even if it comes immediately after a heavy dinner.
Doing this can cause a number of digestive issues including heartburn, bloating and acid reflux. It can also contribute to unwanted weight gain because your body doesn’t get enough time to burn off those calories.
This is a sign to start having early dinners that can give you at least three hours in between before going to bed. Also, avoid lying down immediately after eating so the digestion process can go on smoothly.
Brushing your teeth
We should be brushing our teeth after meals but not immediately after, especially after eating or drinking something acidic. That is because you will end up brushing off the protective enamel on your teeth.
It’s recommended that you wait at least 30 minutes after eating before brushing to prevent this enamel erosion.
Heavy exercising
The debate rages on as to whether we should be eating before or after exercise. Although they both have different benefits, the main thing is timing.
Working out immediately after eating is never a good idea because it could put pressure on your digestive system, causing problems like nausea and vomiting. You can, however, go for a light stroll at least 30 minutes after a meal.
Mindless snacking
When your goal is to shed weight, mindless snacking is a trap that will affect your progress. A sweet or savory snack after meals sounds very tempting but it’s very counterproductive.
It’s important to be mindful about what you snack on and ask yourself if you actually need some extra snacks when you just ate.
If you often find yourself carelessly munching after meals, start training yourself to be stricter so you can hit your weight goals.
Heavy drinking
Drinking heavily on an empty stomach never works out well because it could cause a more intense hang over with terrible episodes of vomiting. Drinking too much and too fast on the other hand after you just ate could cause similar problems as well.
When you know you might drink a lot on a night out, you should eat first but, also pace yourself. This will give time for the food to digest without any major interruptions.
