The Director General of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Service Ghana, Mawusi Nudekor Awity, has urged teachers and students to leverage technology for effective quality education.
She said technology has become one of the key areas across the world making every aspect of our life easier, effective, and safer for the future generations.
She made the call at the launch of the Second National Digital and Distance Learning Conference held in Accra. The two learning platforms launched were Minecraft Intervention and Learning Platform.
The conference was on the theme: Reimaging Education: A Call on Multi-Stakeholder Coordination and Action for Equitable Access to Digital and Distance Learning in Africa.
Mrs Awity said technology would help leap Ghana’s Education from its traditional form to a digital and problem-free form, adding that technology would deepen educational system in schools.
Speaking about the online learning platform initiative, she said it would allow students make use of their leisure while surfing the internet, adding that online learning provides equitable access to all students.
She said Ghana Technical and Vocational Educational Training (GTVET) was actively exploring ways in which it can capitalise on this initiative to further enrich the teaching and learning experience.
She said the theme for this year’s conference resonated with TVET’s vision of seamlessly integrating technology into our educational landscape.
Mrs Awity said the platform would help guide both teachers and students through their academic activities to elevate their knowledge levels, adding that virtual learning provides the opportunity for distance students.
“Electronic books should be provided on these online learning platforms for easy access to texts books for students,” she said.
“In this regard, I extend a sincere call to action to all stakeholders, whether gathered in person or participating online. It is through your support that we can collectively harness technology's potential to elevate the standards of teaching and learning across all TVET disciplines,” she added.
She noted that it was through such partnerships that can channel the collective wisdom, experience, and resources of both agencies toward the common goal of advancing technical and vocational education.
She advised students to leverage these online learning platforms to harness knowledge and skills to transform the learning system of students.
Mr Abdourahamane Diallo, a representative from UNESCO, in his remarks said the establishment of the learning platform will ensure quality and effective education for all.
He said that Ghana’s initiative to implement the learning platforms in the educational sectors shows its commitment to make education a key role in the growth of its economy.
He said technology would help provide valuable insights for students to be able to compete with the western world in terms of building data saver appliances, adding that it would help build the capacity of teachers.
He advised the Centre for National Distance Learning and Open Schooling (CENDLOS) to ensure online safety and privacy for children and include students with special needs to meet the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) goal four.
He commended Ghana’s vital contribution to educate students for the betterment of all, adding that UNESCO is ready to support Ghana with policies, recommendations, and resources to promote quality education in Ghana.
CENDLOS is an institution set up to regulate, control and advise on online education and open schooling. It allows learning to be accessible, flexible, and affordable to all, using modern, innovative technology in open, distance and electronic learning.
It seeks to increase access to education for all and blend the current educational system with innovative ICT solutions and to ensure quality education at all levels. It uses audio-visual lessons as supplementary and complementary teaching and learning materials at the pre-tertiary level.
