Former Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) should elect a presidential candidate who is marketable enough to represent the party in the 2024 general election.
According to the NPP flagbearer hopeful, if the party is not ready to go into opposition, then it should listen to the plea of Ghanaians.
He was speaking to delegates in the Ashanti Region ahead of the party’s Super Delegates Conference.
“Breaking the eight that we have been singing about, it is not the delegates that will break it...it is the six million people who vote for the NPP...so it is the entire Ghanaian voters who can break the eight for the party,” he said.
Mr Kyerematen who was flanged by some constituency chairmen, MPs and party stalwarts touted his quest to lead the NPP as a “national call.”
According to him, he is the only candidate who can win over two million votes for the party in the Ashanti Region.
Speaking to JoyNews’ Nana Boakye Yiadom, some party chairmen across the region endorsed the former Trade Minister to lead the party to victory in next year’s general election.
“You are the kingmakers, your decision is final and I know you will give your support to Alan Kyerematen.”
“I believe that after your speech, they will listen and ask me to also vote for you,” another region chairman told the delegates.
On her side, the former MP for Evalue-Ajomoro-Gwira Constituency, Catherine Ablema Afeku said the delegate must remain resolute in electing a candidate who can win the 2024 presidential election for the party.
“For the past four months, we’ve been travelling the length and breadth of the country telling the delegates that you need to choose a flagbearer who can become a president not just a flagbearer and it resonates with the people in the Ashanti region.
"The people genuinely know that it is his time, that is the euphoria we’re all enjoying,” she said.
The MP for Tema West Constituency in the Greater Accra region, Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah also expressed confidence that the former Trade Minister will emerge victorious in the party’s flagbearership race.
