The Volta Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service ((GNFS) has honoured a female officer of the Service with a citation for her impressive work.
The awardee, Fire Woman (FW) Ernestina Bontu, received the honour for excellent performance, confidence, bravery and high level of professionalism in discharging her duty as a fire officer.
The Command in a citation said: “your display of confidence and bravery as a newly recruited fire officer in dousing a fire single handedly in Ho Central market thereby containing the fire from spreading is worthy of notice and commendation.”
“This display of confidence and bravery did not only portray what fire women are capable of doing best, but also affirms and echoes the popular cliché what men can do women can do better.”
Assistant Chief Fire Officer One (ACFO One), Mr Joy Ameyibor Ayim, Volta Regional Commander of the Service told Ghana News Agency in March this year, a woman was frying yam in the market, and an unfortunately, the oil poured into the fire and cylinder caught fire.
He noted the FW Bontu, who was on duty at the market fire post quickly moved in and single handedly brought the fire under control and prevented it from spreading to other parts of the market.
This act of bravery, confidence and professionalism exhibited by the awardee, he said, deserved recognition and commendation, hence the award. FW Bontu thanked the Command for the recognition and the honour done to her and pledged to continue to give up her best.
