The New Patriotic Party’s, NPP, 35-year-old Nana Abrakwa Asare says he is the man to end the dominance of the NDC's Thomas Nyarko Ampem, the incumbent MP for Asougyaman constituency in the Eastern Region.
Filing his nomination forms to signal his preparedness to contest the parliamentary slot of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Abrakwa Asare expressed his determination to unseat Thomas Nyarko Ampem in the 2024 elections if he emerges as the party’s candidate for the constituency.
He said this during a rally in Atimpoku, shortly after submitting his nomination papers at the constituency office on Friday, August 4, 2023.
“There are a lot of challenges in the constituency as we speak. Infrastructure is a problem, we talk about education and that is also a problem, we talk about job creation, and agriculture is a problem. Our tourism potential hasn't been utilized, and this is what we stand for.”
He added, “We stand for change, we stand for a new energy and we want to change the narrative of Asougyaman when I'm given the mandate.”
Since 2017, the Asougyaman parliamentary seat has been the sole reserve of the NDC’s one-time District Chief Executive Thomas Nyarko Ampem.
While the incumbent has secured a third nomination from his party to contest the seat again in 2024, the 35-year-old administrator at the National Premix Fuel Secretariat, Nana Abrakwa Asare of the NPP, says he is the one to change the trend.
“I'm the best man to take the seat from the National Democratic Congress. When we put together the right candidates who will be able to synergize all the energies together, who will be able to unite all the fronts, I believe we'll be able to annex the seat. One of the key things that I seek to do would be creating jobs or job creation. I want to create a very convenient environment for businesses to develop.”
Some party stalwarts including MMDCEs from North Tongu, South Dayi, Kpando, Ningo Prampram, and Odododiodio among others, took turns to appeal to delegates to vote for someone who can wrestle the seat from the NDC.
“I will plead with all of you that the power is in your hands. Vote for Nana, and Nana will win the seat for us” the DCE for South Dayi, Godwin Dzadzawa noted.
Nii Lante Bannerman added that “If we want a capable person to win the Asougyaman seat for us, that person is in Nana Abrokwa Asare. He is the one that can help snatch the seat from the NDC.”
Some delegates of the constituency say Nana Abrakwa Asare has what it takes to secure victory for the NPP come 2024.
“Nana Abrokwa is an all-rounded person who has the capacity to enter any corner to speak to all manner of persons based on his diverse tribal background, so we the delegates here believe he can win the Asougyaman seat for the NPP in 2024.”
With nominations expected to come to a close by August 10, the race for the NPP’s Asougyaman parliamentary slot has intensified with three other aspirants including the Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority, Pius Hadzide expected to file their nominations forms.
