Chris Hughton has revealed he wasted no time in accepting the Black Stars coaching role after he was offered the job by the Ghana Football Association.
According to the former Brighton and Hove Albion boss, talks to get him on board began while he was in Ghana for holidays at a point the team had messed up during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
Hughton was first appointed the technical advisor of the Black Stars ahead of the 2022 World Cup playoff against Nigeria, joining Otto Addo, George Boateng and Mas-Ud Didi Dramani with Ghana going on to beat Nigeria for a spot at the Mundial.
Speaking to TalkSports on Tuesday, August 1, the 64-year-old detailed how he eventually landed the opportunity to coach the Black Stars.
"It actually started when I was on holiday in Ghana and we hadn't done so well in the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon and the FA changed the coach and they wanted to bring in another coach...," he said.
"Most people thought I was there for the job but that was not the case. It worked out because I was not working...I was asked if I will want to be a technical advisor for the two big games against Nigeria in the 2022 World Cup playoffs which we won.
"So the fact that we won, they asked me if I would want to continue this role going through to the World Cup because they saw me as an experienced coach and also have a Ghanaian background so I was asked if I could help. My role was to support the head coach and the technical team.
"Post-World Cup, I was asked if I would be the head coach and it didn't take me a long time to accept," he added.
Since being appointed the head coach of the team, Hughton has managed three games, winning one and drawing two.
