In the heart of the city of Accra, a group of kids who have fallen through the cracks are getting a second chance. They attend a school specifically designed for children living on the streets, where they receive an education and the support they need to turn their lives around.
But now, thanks to a generous donation from people of all backgrounds, these kids have something truly special.
Off the Streets Academy is run by Samuel Nii Addo. He began this initiative about 15 years ago, and with the tips he receives as a tour guide, he is able to provide for the school.
Off the Streets Academy (OSA), is an informal school taking care of street children in Jamestown, Accra.
A group of dedicated educators and volunteers are making a difference with OSA by initiating a project that will serve as a valuable resource centre for students.
The project is initiated by La Ruche au Savoir (a French NGO) and supported by France Volontaires which is offering a wide range of books, educational materials, and a tranquil space for studying and learning.
By fostering a love for reading and providing access to diverse literature and science books, the library aims to enhance the educational experience and encourage personal growth among the students.
The friends of OSA, together with La Ruche aux Savoirs, AFD and Liebherr Ghana Ltd., have been of great help in the process of the Library project.
Martha Blankson, CEO of La Ruche aux Savoirs, said “Today a reader, tomorrow a leader”.
In addition, the French Development Agency (AFD) in Ghana did not hesitate to provide the school with two printers and a bookshelf.
"For every child who opens a book, a new world unfolds. Let's join hands and open doors of opportunity through the power of education."
The newly opened library at Off the Streets Academy is just below Jamestown Lighthouse.
