Lecturer and Memory trainer, Godwin Adey-Afful has advised potential candidates for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASCE), to avoid learning for long hours.
According to him, it makes it difficult for the brain to capture everything at the same time.
He said this while explaining some secret techniques for passing exams on Joy Prime’s morning show on Wednesday.
"Stop using unblock learning; it’s called bench learning. You do six hours and think you’ve done much; no, little is going in. Take your time and break it," he urged.
Additionally, Mr. Adey-Afful mentioned that read, recap, and rest, which he calls the 30/7/7 cycle, is another good strategy that he recommends to young candidates.
This method, he said, helps students study for 30 minutes, rest for 7 minutes, review what has been studied so far, and start over, making it a cycle.
As part of the strategies, the lecturer also encouraged students to practice and solve more past questions in order to boost their examination confidence.
"Try your hand at past questions. That’s one secret. I’m a lecturer, so I don’t have to disclose why you need to answer more past questions. You need to work on more past questions if you want to pass," Mr. Adey-Afful added.
Based on research, he indicated that this technique works more effectively than re-studying what has been taught.
The tutor urged students to find compelling reasons why they aim to pass the exams to help them stay more focused and pass successfully.
"You need to have that reason and write it down."
Identifying one’s weakness is another important approach that Mr Adey-Afful pointed out. He believes the method improves an individual’s learning abilities.
