Sports minister, Mustapha Ussif, has described Ghana’s national team players at all levels as ‘selfish’ and ‘unpatriotic’.
He suggests the state is on the receiving end of a one-sided relationship which benefits players more than it does the country.
“The state will make all the resources available by making sure we give opportunities to our national teams, get them flights for camping, accommodate them for long periods, feed them and give them trial matches [friendlies].
“And when these players get to tournaments, instead of focusing on these tournaments, focus is on their bonuses and whatnot. Meanwhile, they are being paid per diem to focus on the tournament,” Ussif said at the 29th Ordinary session of GFA’s Congress.
Ussif has charged the GFA to develop players who will understand what it means to put on Ghana national team jersey.
“In all the effort the FA is making to develop grassroots football, we should include in our development process, the spirit of nationalism and patriotism among our players.
"The management of our national teams is a solemn responsibility entrusted to the Ghana Football Association. With this trust comes the obligation to account to the people of Ghana for your stewardship," he said.
