Joy FM's Latif Iddrisu has been adjudged Mining Reporter of the Year for a third time in seven years at the 7th Ghana Mining Industry Awards held on November 19, 2020, at the Marriott Hotel in Accra.
He won the award with his documentary 'galamsey; winning some battles losing the war?"
A documentary film that reveals how the top hierarchy of operation vanguard was vilified by politicians because they felt the rigorous fight was inimical to their secret illicit business.
The investigative piece also revealed that in 2018 when Ghana placed a moratorium on small-scale mining, the country recorded 2.1 million ounces of gold in that sector.
The highest since the country started documenting gold production statistics in 1990.
The documentary also critically analyzed how the apparent collusion and involvement of government officials in the illicit business of illegal mining was not just mere perception, as a senior minister publicly tried to justify the illegality.
The Minister in charge of the Environment was also captured in the investigative piece explaining to a conspirator why certain individuals have to be allowed to perpetrate the illegal mining business in order to raise money to fund the activities of the governing New Patriotic Party.
Central regional chairman who was contracted to keep custody of the seized excavators, was arrested when he allegedly stole and sold some of the excavators.
The film has since regenerated the debate on the illegal mining enterprise which has now gained momentum.
Latif Iddrisu previously won the highly prestigious award back to back in 2019 and 2020.
Picking up the award for the third time makes him the journalist with the most wins. His wife who represented him at the awards picked it on his behalf.
Latif Iddrisu is currently in the US seeking medical attention for the injury he suffered back in 2018 when he was assaulted by some police officers at the CID headquarters in Accra.
