The National Teaching Council has called for the support of all Ghanaians for the teachers’ licensure examination.
This, according to the council, will help get rid of unserious and unqualified individuals who may have been working as teachers.
The Head of Public Affairs for the council, Dennis Osei-Owusu, who spoke on Joy Prime’s morning show, stated that some prospective teachers lack the necessary expertise and preparation for the demands of the job despite their desire to enter the sector.
That notwithstanding, he said the unserious nature of the majority of teacher employees has contributed to the devaluation of the profession.
"Somebody has taken this exam nine times and still the person failed. Last Friday, the person came to my office through someone who knows me and thought maybe I could be of help. When he came, I tried engaging him, and he’s somebody who is not ready for the work…"
"That’s why I was telling you that most of our people got here and we still don’t understand why we got here. That’s why we’re calling for the whole nation to help us look into how they got here," he told Roselyn Felli on Tuesday.
Despite their belief that they have passed, several of the candidates have claimed that the council has intentionally mistreated and failed them.
Speaking on the show, Osei-Owusu entreated such victims to contact the council for remarking if possible.
"If you think you failed and you’re not comfortable and you think you did well, our doors are opened for remarking. You can even take us to court; we’re ready to face you. Your scripts are there to show if you were really failed on purpose or if you did well and we decided to fail you."
Recently, the National Teaching Council revealed that about 83.5% of candidates failed the teacher licensure exams held in May 2023. The NTC noted that out of the 7,728 students who participated in the re-sit exams, only 1,277 passed.
The assessment in numeracy, literacy, and professional knowledge is to enable qualified students to get a professional licence while attracting young graduates with the required professional knowledge and skills to teach.
