A senior law lecturer at the University of Ghana Law School is calling for a specific law framework for land cases in Ghana.
Kwame Gyan explained that although there are many courts to handle land issues, the number of land cases being filed a day has left an overwhelming backlog at the various courts.
He told JoyFM's Super Morning Show on Thursday that there is a need to design new specific rules to expedite the cases.
"Yes, the land courts are working. They are all across the country. In Accra, there are more than 15 courts dedicated to land cases, but how many cases are filed every day? It's not easy.
"So the system may end up clogged again. But one proposal that we can apply to help push the settlement of land cases is the design of specific rules for handling land cases," he said.
Mr Gyan has also explained that some land cases could be resolved by a simple survey.
According to him, many of the land disputes in courts could have been caused by a simple error during a survey and therefore could be resolved by employing the expertise of professional land surveyors.
He however lamented that judges should instead seek the expertise of private land surveyors rather than those of surveyors assigned by government.
Depending on the latter has resulted in many land cases being stalled, according to the lawyer.
Speaking on the menace posed by land guards, Mr Gyan has asked the police not to relent in enforcing the laws in order to bring land guards encroaching on lands legally secured by other people to book.
