For four consecutive years, Bolgatanga Girls’ SHS have suffered eliminations at the regional qualifiers of the National Science and Maths Quiz.
They have been yet again kicked out by Notre Dame Seminary SHS in the 2023 Upper East regional qualifiers.
Their last appearance in 2019 saw the girls at the heart of the Upper East region exiting the national championship at the one-eighth stage after falling prey to University Practice SHS.
They were sent packing following an 18-point margin against University Practice SHS’s 37 marks.
In renewed efforts to redeem their image at the national qualifiers, Bolgatanga Girls’ SHS entered the 2023 qualifiers with hopes of ending its 4-year drought.
But in a contest that mirrored events in the last four years, their resolve was cut short yet again by the sons of Mother Mary after trailing them by a 30-point margin.
Members of the school’s quiz team attributed their sequential loss to inadequate resources and motivation from old students of the school.
Their coordinator and Head of the Science Department, Barnabas Awaredjan believes the support from the old girls could boost the confidence of the contestants ending the jinx that has befell the school.
“The last time we qualified to Accra, not a single old girl came to support us. I believe if they come around, the girls will be gingered to do more,” he said.
After struggling to match up with the boys from Notre Dame Seminary, Bolga Girls only managed some 13 points at the end of the four-round contest.
Although perturbed by the abrupt low performance of the school, the girls are confident of bouncing back stronger.
“We’ve learned our mistakes. We will come back with more fire next year. The students after us will be trained well to face off against other contestants. Hopefully, we will win the championship,” one of the team members said.
Meanwhile, Navrongo SHS and Awe SHS have also booked slots at the national competition, hoping to devour any school they may cross paths with.
