Stephen Koomson had always had the ambition of being a lawyer, however, for two years, this dream seemed bleak due to financial constraints.
Despite recording an impressive 5As and 3Bs in various subjects in the 2021 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), the brilliant 21-year-old's education was truncated by the lack of financial support.
In his quest to make some money to continue his education, Koomson resorted to palm wine tapping and illegal mining popularly known as galmasey.
The trajectory of his life changed, when his story went viral on social media. The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), upon hearing it have offered him a full educational scholarship to pursue Law at the University of Ghana in the next Academic year.
In an interaction, the Executive Director of the GNPC, Dr Dominic Eduah praised the important role the media plays in highlighting important societal issues like that of this young man which has seen him get an opportunity to dram again.
“His story coming to light is testament to the power of the media in highlighting important social issues such as this.
“Social media for good’ is an agenda we all must aspire to grow and I commend Ameyaw Debrah for shedding light on young Koomson’s plight that’s seen his educational fortunes now spun on its head”, Dr Dominic Eduah stated.
Dr Eduah reaffirmed the commitment of the GNPC Foundation to continue supporting the development of the human capital of the country.
“As a Foundation, we will continue to support the development of Ghanaian capacities through education and training”, he assured.
