ECG’s measures to block losses raise revenue in a month

Revenue collection by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has moved from GH₵450 million to over GH₵1 billion monthly following the adoption of measures to block siphoning of money by some staff at the entity.

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia who disclosed this said it took digitization of the company’s revenue collection to identify the culprits.

Three employees of ECG, who allegedly conspired with a vendor to manipulate a software of the company are in court charged with stealing and money laundering.

The said power theft resulted in a total amount of GH₵1. 2 million of prepaid credits.

Addressing members of the NPP in London, the Vice President said it is now difficult for staff to manipulate the system.

ECG in March undertook massive disconnection exercise to recover GH₵5.7 billion debt asking its customers to pay up or get disconnected.

The institution said Private manufacturing industries and mining firms are the highest debtors, followed by some government institutions.
