AngloGold Ashanti has pledged to deepen collaboration with its stakeholders to create a resilient and socio-economically self-sustaining community within Obuasi in the Ashanti region.
The company which operates the Obuasi mine, one of the biggest in Africa, said the move is part of efforts aimed at achieving its 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan.
Senior Manager for Sustainability at AngloGold Ashanti, Obuasi Mine, Emmanuel Baidoo, told Joy Business that his outfit will work around three pillars to diversify the local economy of Obuasi.
“We seek to within the 10 years’ work with all our stakeholders contribute to building a resilient and socio-economically self-sustaining Obuasi. And I’m very emphatic Obuasi because everybody mentions Obuasi”.
To be able to do this, Mr. Baidooo, said three levels or three pillars of outcomes have been identified, including improving cross-sectional partnership.
“To be able to do this, three levels or three pillars of outcomes were identified. So, we have an outcome around improving social development in and around Obuasi, we have an outcome around diversifying the local economy, and an outcome around improving cross-sectional partnership.”
Continuing, he said “to be able to achieve these intermediate outcomes, there are a number of immediate outcomes we seek to work hard to achieve”.
AngloGold launches 10-year socio-economic development plan
In 2022, AngloGold launched a 10-year socio-economic development plan (SEDEP), which encapsulates a clear strategy to ensure Obuasi mine and its host communities reap sustained benefits from the mining business.
Its aim was to be a responsible steward of the environments in which it operates, the ore bodies entrusted to by the host communities, and the capital provided by the shareholders.
