Lawyer and Senior Vice President of Imani Africa, Kofi Bentil says Ghanaians are praying for the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng to emerge triumphant in fighting corruption during his tenure in office.
The lawyer says the Special Prosecutor through some conduct of his has made it evident that he was serious about his work to fight corruption in Ghana.
Speaking on the Saturday, June 10 edition of Newsfile on Joy FM, Mr Bentil said, “We are praying for him that he [the SP] succeeds. He is maybe one of the last bulwarks that we have.”
Mr Bentil said the Special Prosecutor proved to be "extremely convincing" about his work and commitment when he appeared on the authoritative programme to shed more light on the controversy surrounding the arrest of former Environment Minister Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, and related matters.
He confessed that initially when he heard that the SP was going on the programme, he had doubts about the import.
Still, on the issue of corruption, the legal practitioner pointed out that the advocacy for the creation of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) was attributable to the fact that Ghana had failed in the quest to fight corruption, from the Presidency through the Attorney General's office.
Moreover, Mr Bentil indicated that Mr Agyebeng's stance during the early years of his term in office caused Ghanaians to doubt whether or not he was truly committed to combating corruption.
But he countered and maintained that the Special Prosecutor has "come back on track” in the discharge of his duties.
Despite Mr Bentil commending the Special Prosecutor for the work he was doing, he urged him to also persist in the right direction so as to win the trust of Ghanaians.
“I want Kissi Agyebeng to appreciate that he's done a very good job, but he still has time to deal with. And if this kind of conviction, this kind of honesty goes through, I believe he will win our hearts.”
“And so, again, he should keep in mind that whatever happens over the period, he needs to win people over time,” Mr Bentil advised.
