The Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s Metro Health Department in the next few weeks will collaborate with the Ghana Police Service to arrest all junkies and squatters at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange in Accra.
The objective is to save the heart of the capital which has been turned into a rubbish dump and sleeping place.
It has also become the safe haven for criminals who attack unsuspecting people at night, according to the Director of the Metro Health Department, Madam Florence Kuukyi, who adds that the occupation of the space under the interchange by all kinds of people, including suspected drug addicts, is an eyesore that must be curtailed.
Florence Kuukyi spoke when she led her team on a tour of the interchange enclave under the Joy Clean Ghana Campaign.
When the environmental officers got there, some of the squatters were far asleep while others were hanging around.
They were however, made to sweep the place while their makeshift beds were destroyed.
The interchange and its colourful aesthetic decorations have become known as Ghana Dubai.
After a few years since its inauguration, the once beautiful Kwame Nkrumah Interchange has somehow defaced, with indiscipline now a common spectacle as drivers and pedestrians engage in all manner of unauthorised activities due to lack of enforcement of city by-laws.
The squatters defecate, urinate and dispose of wastes indiscriminately.
In an interview, Madam Kuukyi said the place must be cleared before it turns out to be something else.
She said the area is a central and key point in the city and therefore their presence should not be entertained. She added that the situation demands the collaborative effort of all
According to her the collaborative effort will yield a positive result as it geared towards driving away.
