Former Deputy Information Minister, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, says the National Democratic Congress (NDC) cannot afford apathy and lethargy breed among incumbent MPs who lost their bid to represent in the 2024 elections.
Speaking on Joy FM's Top Story, he noted that it is thus important to assure the MPs of their prominence and role in the NDC, as the party's flagbearer, John Mahama, has promised to do.
Mr Kwakye added that this helps ensure the MPs "have the requisite motivation to see out the remainder of their tenure in a manner that helps to advance the course of the party, parliament and Ghana as a whole."
The newly elected NDC parliamentary candidate for Abura Asebu-Kwamankese added that losing their bids could be devastating for the incumbent MPs.
"Given the tightrope we walk in Parliament because of the closeness of the numbers, we cannot afford as a party to have apathy and lethargy within our ranks."
On Saturday, May 13, a total of 16 MPs lost their chance to represent their constituents in the upcoming 2024 elections as they were defeated in the party’s internal elections.
However, delivering his acceptance speech at the University for Development Studies, Tamale Campus, the newly-elected flagbearer of the NDC John Mahama described the ousted MPs as heroes.
He called on incumbent Members of Parliament and candidates who lost in the primaries to assist with the party’s campaign ahead of the 2024 election.
According to him, the experiences and resources of these individuals will be needed to steer the affairs of the country should the party be voted into power.
Meanwhile, Mr Kwakye believes Mr Mahama will also reach out to his flag bearer opponents Kojo Bonsu and Dr Kwabena Duffour to ensure their support ahead of the 2024 elections.
