All legal barriers have been removed and the way is now clear for the Electoral Commission to supervise the conduct of the National Democratic Congress primaries slated for Saturday 13th May, 2023, says the elections management body.
According to the EC, this follows the discontinuance of the Application for Injunction by Dr. Kwabena Duffour and Mr. Edgar Asamoah Boateng that sought to restrain the Commission from conducting the NDC Primaries.
The EC on Thursday told the NDC to divest itself of all legal entanglements before it would supervise the election when it emerged that a flagbearer aspirant of the party had applied for an injunction against the polls following discrepancies in the photo album of delegates to be used for voting, scheduled for Saturday.
The EC said following the decision, it had suspended its intended distribution of logistics for the polls.
On Friday morning however, Dr. Duffour withdrew his application, and another one filed by a parliamentary aspirant, Mr. Edgar Asamoah Boateng was also withdrawn.
The party itself says it will no longer use the photo album for the polls.
- A total of 356,624 voters are expected at 420 voting centres.
- Each voting centre is supposed to take a maximum of 1,200 delegates.
- A delegates list will be used at polling centres and a delegate will have to produce a valid national voters ID issued by the EC to be able to vote.
Whereas a total of 117 and 107 candidates are competing for seats in Accra and Kumasi respectively, the third most contested place is the Volta region with 75 candidates.
Late Friday evening, the EC issued a statement announcing it is all ready to supervise the polls and that arrangements were being put in place to ensure a credible and transparent election.
The statement was signed by the Chairperson of the EC, Jean Mensa.
