The campaign spokesperson for flagbearer hopeful of the National Democratic Congress, Dr Kwabena Duffour is optimistic of victory for the aspirant should elections be held presently.
According to Antonio Edem Asinyo, the alleged support from some stalwarts of the party for former President Mahama does not guarantee a win for him.
Antonio is concerned that the issue of discrepancy raised in the lawsuit could mar the primaries which come off this week Saturday, May 13.
According to him, projections and the support garnered during campaign tours of the aspirant indicate that he stands a chance to win the primaries even if the primaries is to take place before the set date.
“What we as NDC should be focusing on is winning power and whatever it is that must be done in winning power, you must do. Whether one person is winning or losing, for me, it’s irrelevant but I tell you today, Dr. Duffuor is going to win the election even if it’s done today,” he said on JoyNews’ AM Show on Wednesday.
Expressing his concerns further, Antonio noted that rumours suggesting that former President John Mahama is an automatic winner of the flagbearer race because of indications that he is supported by a majority of the party’s stalwarts should not hold.
He expressed that the said supporters form just 1% of the decision-makers. He added that the important decision-makers are the branch executives.
Meanwhile, with barely a week to their primaries, Mr Duffuor has filed a suit against the party.
In a writ filed at an Accra High Court, Dr Duffour indicated that the party failed to provide the required photo album register five weeks before the elections as stated in the party’s rules.
He stated that a partial photo album register was given to his team on May 4, a few days before the elections rather than in March when they had submitted a request for one.
“The Plaintiff adds that to their utmost surprise, upon verification, it was found that the number of constituencies on the hard drive given to his representatives was 220 in number as opposed to the alleged number of constituencies indicated by the Defendant,” he stated.
