The police have arrested two persons said to have recently attacked a journalist at Dagbon FM in Tamale.
The suspects were arrested on Monday, May 8, 2023.
According to the police, they were arrested after a video footage was obtained to aid a probe into the assault.
“The Police have today, 8th May, 2023 arrested the two people who allegedly attacked Abubakari Sadiq, a presenter with the Dagbong Radio station in Tamale while he was hosting a programme at the station on 3rd May, 2023.”
“Following the attack, the Police visited the scene but the suspects had bolted. A video footage of the incident was obtained to aid the investigation.
The statement added that the accused are in police custody and will be arraigned soon.
“The suspects, Iddrisu Hardi alias Pagaaza and Mumuni Osman are in custody assisting investigation and will be put before court,” the statement concluded.
Abubakari Sadiq Gariba, a radio presenter was physically assaulted during a live broadcast on May 3, 2023.
This was after he reportedly criticised one of them during a discussion on the Abudu and Andani conflict on a political campaign platform.
Following the unfortunate incident, many institutions have called for the arrest and prosecution of the two.
Among the institutions was the Information Ministry - which strongly condemned it.
It described as totally unacceptable, the attack on the broadcaster and emphasised the importance of protecting journalists and ensuring that they can carry out their work without fear of violence or intimidation.
