The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has recovered some Gh¢3.1 billion out of the total Gh¢5.7 billion debt owned by customers in its recent revenue mobilisation drive.

Speaking at a media briefing, the Managing Director of the Company, Samuel Mahama said although the company has achieved significant feet, there was a lot more to be done.

“Out of the Gh¢5.7 billion ECG manage to recoup Gh¢ 3.1 billion,” he said on Thursday, May 4, 2023.

Mr Mahama said despite the attempt made to recover the remaining amount, some companies were untraceable and others had collapsed.

“The number of companies that have collapsed that we cannot find in terms of some taking the meters and some of them the physical location not present. Their total bills put together is about Gh¢750 million and the last group is people who are post-paid customers who probably want to give the benefit of doubt some of them it was true.

“There were demolishing exercises, some of them flooding so those places are no longer in existence some of them too we just can’t find them. Their bills come up to about Gh¢750 million,” he added.

The Managing Director warned that customers using power illegally to rectify or face prosecution for power theft.

“If you know you are consuming power with no recourse to ECG please visit our office with immediate effect. This is a moratorium. Visit our office, and we will set up your account in the system, we will check your premises and we will put you on a flat rate.

"You will continue paying such a flat rate until your meter is ready and you will be migrated unto the meter. The moment that is done, your service is now complete.

"Please and please, come to our office because after the date is given for the next revenue mobilisation to take effect, all power consumed by you is considered illegal and considered as stealing," he added.
