The General Secretary of the governing NPP has taken a swipe at some civil society organisations who have called on the police to invite Agric Minister over his comment that the party will not hand over to the NDC in 2024.
According to Justin Frimpong Kodua, CSOs have misconstrued the context within which the statement was made.
'When Bryan said we have the men, he did not say men to perpetuate violence but the educated and brave men in our party. He made a rightful statement. There is nothing wrong with what he said.
'I am surprised some civil society organizations are calling on the IGP to invite Bryan for what?' he said in vernacular on Adom TV.
The General Secretary emphasised that there was nothing wrong with Bryan Acheampong’s comments and that the calls for his arrest are misplaced.
He continued that “The NPP is not a party which supports violence, we don’t encourage things which bring division and stagnate the growth of our nation.
“Check our history we are the political party that has deepened democracy in this country.”
Mr Kodua explained that the Minister of Food and Agriculture made the comments to counter claims by the NDC that if elections were held today, they would easily win.
“The NDC believes that given the challenges that we have been facing as a country if an election was held, they would win. Fuel prices went up the cedi was struggling against the dollar but things are beginning to stabilise now because of the intervention of government.
“Fuel prices are dropping, the cedi is doing well so in 2024, the NDC will collapse this is the context in which Bryan Acheampong spoke,” he added.
However, the NDC insists the comment by Bryan Acheampong has the potential of subverting the will of the people.
According to the Director of the party’s Legal Directorate, Abraham Amaliba, the NDC will be petitioning the Criminal Investigations Department(CID) and the Inspector General of Police( IGP) to arrest and prosecute Bryan Acheampong.
“This petition is to call for the arrest and prosecution of Bryan Acheampon for his unsavoury comments, which were made during the Easter break. We of the Legal Affairs Directorate of the NDC are of the view that his comments have the potential of subverting the will of the people during the 2024 election.
“And so, yes, I can confirm to you that today, at around about 02:00 p.m., we would present a formal petition for the arrests and prosecution of Bryan Acheampong,” he said.
