Christian Klah, a 73-year-old carver at the Centre for National Culture in Accra, has spoken about how the trade has earned him a livelihood for the past fifty-one (51) years.
Christian told Joy FM’s Kwame Dadzie that he learnt the craft from somebody after he completed his elementary education.
He further noted that, through carving, he has been able to cater for his family.
“I started it since 1972 and I have used it to look after my children,” he said.
Christian Klah indicated he gets higher sales during December when a lot of foreigners and Ghanaians in the Diaspora visit Ghana.
Speaking about how people in the arts are marginalised by society, he mentioned that the younger generation is focused on making money in the shortest time, a reason most of them shy away from engaging in works like carving.
“Now the young boys want quick money so they think this is a waste of time but when you do it, they would like to come and buy,” he told Joy FM.
Christian Klah creates different types of objects including animals such as elephants, and dogs.
