Ghanaian poet and playwright Chief Moomen, may soon bow out of the poetry space.
The creative entrepreneur told Kwame Dadzie in an interview in Joy FM’s entertainment Twitter spaces conversation that his interest in poetry has waned, as compared to the past.
“These days I am not as thrilled when I get [poetry] gigs as I used to probably a couple of years ago and I’m actually looking forward to retiring because I also realise that I have spent a lot of time doing commercial poetry that I haven’t really taken time off to write the things I really want to write,” Chief Moomen.
Chief Moomen also said that it is impossible for anyone to do poetry as a full-time career.
“Can you practice as a poet, as a career full-time, and that is what you do, that is what you survive on completely until your retirement? From my experience I don’t think so and I don’t necessary think it should be so,” he said.
Chief has performed poetry on big stages in Ghana and abroad.
Last year, he delivered a keynote performance on the theme ‘Ambition for Change’ at the Transformation Education Pre-Summit in Paris.
In theatre, he is famed for his theatrical performance ‘Wogbejeke’ which was adopted for the celebration of Ghana’s 60th independence anniversary in 2017.
He has currently put together another stage play titled ‘The Mansa World.’
‘Joy Entertainment Unpacked’, is a weekly Twitter Spaces conversation on Joy FM’s Twitter page.
This week’s discussion was about creating commercial avenues for poetry in Ghana.
Other speakers on the show were Poetra Asantewa (poet), Nana Asaase (poet), Emma Ofosua (poet, writer ), and Kwame Agyemang Berko (poet, writer).
