The Volta Regional Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Alexander Kwame Nketia, has outlined some of the measures taken by the institution to promote tourism in the region.
He told Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM’s ‘Showbiz A-Z’ that one of the things they do to help the tourism industry is too let the communities in charge of the tourism sites keep the revenue they get from visitations.
In the special Ghana Month episode which was aired from the foot of Afadjato, Nketia noted that there has been an increase in the visitations and revenue in the past few years.
“As of last year, we had at least 44,000 visiting these sites. So that tells you the numbers that are coming and we generated not less than 66,000 cedis for the various tourist sites and these amounts remain with the communities for them to be able to use it to regenerate, redevelop and do things within the communities, while at the same time the government seeks funding to support their development in different ways. But we don’t take from them, we allow it to remain with them so they can use to develop their sites furthermore,” he said.
The communities that own Afadjato have used the proceeds from tourists visitations to build guest houses and other amenities.
The Afadjato edition of ‘Showbiz A-Z', was part of Joy FM’s Ghana Month activities to promote Ghana’s culture in March, the month of Ghana’s independence.
After a successful edition of the outdoor programme in Cape Coast in 2021, there was a encore in Kumasi where the team discovered Asanteman’s rich tourist centres and culture.
The programme also hosted Togbega Homatekpor V, the Paramount Chief of the Gbledi Traditional Area; Togbe Adabra IV, Mankrado of Gbledi Gbogame, the Acting Chairman of the Afadjato-Tagbo Eco-Tourism Centre, Kuma Gavi, and Chief Moomen, poet, playwright and creative entrepreneur.
The Afadjato edition of the show was powered by Joy Entertainment, supported by Adansi Travels.
