Asante Kotoko Board Member, Evelyn Nsiah Asare, has revealed the club’s management and board are in the process of establishing a women’s team for the club.
She confirmed in an interview with Luv Sports that the women’s team of Kotoko, with a yet-to-be-announced name, will be ready for the next football season in Ghana.
The formation of the Kotoko women’s team forms part of CAF and FIFA requirements that all clubs must have female teams.
Already, Kotoko’s arch rivals, Accra Hearts of Oak, have completed the takeover of Nimobi Ladies FC to meet the new CAF requirement in order for the club to possibly earn a slot to participate in the maiden edition of the Africa Super League.
According to reports, Hearts’ Nimobi Ladies will be rechristened Oak Ladies FC.
Since Hearts of Oak acquired their women’s team, fans of the Porcupine Warriors have expressed optimism about their beloved club getting a female team to stand a chance of being part of the groundbreaking Africa Super League.
Speaking to Stephen Zando on LUV FM, Evelyn Nsiah Asare expressed confidence the women’s team will be ready for the next football season in Ghana.
“Yes, there are plans ahead [to set up the Kotoko women’s team].
“When this board took charge of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, it was one of the things they talked about bringing a women's team but the problem is, it all boils down to money.
“The management are also having plans to bring in a women's team. They want to start from scratch, they don’t want to buy, so I believe that next season you will see Asante Kotoko having a women's team in place,” she said.
The winner of the Africa Super League would pocket around $11m of the $100m prize money with each of CAF's 54 member associations set to receive an annual allocation of $1m from the Africa Super League to improve football in Africa.
