Accra Hearts of Oak Sunday play away to Kessben FC at the latter's base at Abrankese near Kumasi in the 27th week Glo Premier League fixtures.
The match, easily one of the most interesting in the week, has a lot of riddles for the championship race, and defending champions Kumasi Asante Kotoko, second behind Hearts on the pile, are already touting the day as the 'The Ascension Day' to overtake Hearts.
Kotoko play as guests of Liberty Professionals at the Ohene Djan Stadium but supporters appear more interested in the Hearts game, seemingly sure of a walkover Liberty. Kotoko won the first round encounter by 3:1.
Hearts who beat Kessben 1:0 in the first round, lead the league with only two points and cannot afford to lose this or any of the remaining games; all tricky, and arduous given their current lousy form.
Thus, while trying to win against Liberty, Kotoko is all prayer that their regional rivals will bail them by thumping Hearts and hoist them (Kotoko) on top of the table.
However Hearts coach Nii Noi Thompson, who sounded so relieved of the intense pressure directed at him by followers of the club after Hearts steadily saw their once healthy 13-point buffer scuttled to only two, now hopes his boys can pick up from their cup victory over Sekondi Eleven Wise in the President's Cup on Wednesday and win the club’s 9th premier league title since the inception of the premiership in 1994.
He told Joy Sports of the cup victory: “It means a lot because you know Hearts of Oak fans, they always want a win and we played three (league) matches, we drew two, lost one and everybody …the rate at which Kotoko is chasing us is very frightening and we want something to appease the fans and it has happened today.”
That hope faces a serious test at Abrankese where Kessben is sure to enjoy massive support from Kotoko fans.
In other matches, King Faisal will play Heart of Lions at the Baba Yara Stadium. Lions won the first round 3:1. Swedru All Blacks hosts Berekum Arsenals at Swedru. Arsenals were 1:0 winners in the first round. Bechem Chelsea are home to Wa All Stars (0:0 first round); at Obuasi, Ashgold play Eleven Wise. Wise won the first round 2:0; Hasaacas will seek revenge against Tema Youth at the Essipong Stadium after going down 3:1 in the first round. Sporting Mirren are home to Real Tamale United with the latter winning the first round 1:0.
