Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has hinted at the restructuring of the Single Spine Salary Structure to reduce salary disparities.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews’ AM Show on Friday, Government Statistician, Professor Samuel Kobina Annim noted that GSS will collaborate with various stakeholders to expedite the restructuring of the Single Spine Salary Structure.
“We are not doing this work on the blindside of the Fair Wages and Salary Commission. Yesterday, we made a public announcement that latest next two weeks, we are going to have a round table discussion where we are going to bring onboard the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, we are going to bring onboard the Public Services Commission, we are going to bring on board the TUC and labour experts. Look at these results and ask ourselves how these results will feed into the restructuring?” he said.
His comments come after the Service revealed that more than 80 per cent of public sector employees earn less than GH₵3000.
This was contained in the earnings inequality report on Thursday.
According to him, the report has exposed the disparities in Single Spine Salary Structure and thus, the need to bridge the gap.
He said for GSS to be able to assess whether the Single Spine Salary Structure is effective, there is the need for policy intervention to have statistical targets.
“...reason why GSS decided to initiate this was that if this exercise had been done, prior to the deployment of the Single Spine, it could have been easy for us to assess whether single spine has worked or not,” he explained
