The spokesperson of the National Democratic Congress, Sammy Gyamfi, has blamed the country's economic misfortunes on the leadership of the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to him, the Veep is the 'chief architect of Ghana's economic woes'.

Sammy Gyamfi said this in reaction to excerpts from a video which shows the senior minister, Yaw Osafo-Maafo, praising Dr Bawumia for his leadership as the head of the country's Economic Management Team (EMT).

In the said video, Mr. Osafo-Maafo was shown hailing Bawumia for his professionalism and prayed for him to continue with his good deeds. But Sammy Gyamfi disagrees.

He said it is Bawumia "whose poor leadership has plunged the country into the unprecedented and catastrophic economic mess we presently find ourselves".

"He is the chief architect of our present economic woes", he tweeted.

The assertion by Sammy Gyamfi adds to the barrage of criticisms of government due to the country's ailing economy.

The critics say government's reckless borrowing is to blame for the present state of affairs.

The most recent public critic is the former Chief Justice of Ghana, Sophia Akuffo; who described government's debt exchange programme as 'wicked, disrespectful and totally wrong".

Madam Sophia Akuffo said she is worried about the fate of pensioners who are crying out against their inclusion in the ongoing debt restructuring.

The stateswoman finds it unfair that her colleagues will be subjected to the ordeal through the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme being undertaken by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

According to her, as long as the situation has to do with the contractual rights of pensioners, she cannot sit unconcerned.

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo, has assured Ghanaians of Government’s commitment to resolving successfully, the difficulties confronting the nation.

Speaking at the 18th Consultative Council Meeting of the Anglican Church on Sunday, 12th February 2023, President Akufo-Addo indicated that he is aware that these are difficult times for Ghana, just as they are for most people in the world.

“However, with the help of Almighty God, and backed by a sense of determination, hard work and collective sacrifices on our part, I am confident that we will successfully confront the difficulties, bring relief to the Ghanaian people, and return the economy back to the high rates of growth that characterised the management of our economy in the three (3) years preceding the COVID outbreak in 2020 and the Russian invasion of Ukraine", the President said.
