The University of Media, Arts, and Communication (UniMAC-GIJ), as part of activities to bring together academia and professionals to deliberate on issues of public interest, is set to host its maiden 2023 public lecture on Thursday, January 26, 2023, at its North Dzorwulu campus.
The lecture, which will be led by 2022 GJA Journalist of the year and broadcaster, Portia Gabor, is dubbed "Journalism, Innovation, and Development: Frontiers for Advocacy and Social Change.”
The event, organised under the auspices of the Directorate of Research, Innovation, and Development (DRID), will be held at the main auditorium of UniMAC-GIJ’s North Dzorwulu campus at 10:00am.
The Director of DRID, Dr. Etse Sikanku said the public lecture is in line with the vision and mission of UniMAC as well as journalism’s objective to champion the cause of the less privileged in society, hence the imperative to bring practitioners to share their experiences with the public.
“UniMAC’s mission is to bridge the gap between the professional world and academia, as it offers the opportunity for preeminent persons to share their knowledge and experience on various issues of national concern in a very thought-provoking manner," he said.
Dr. Sikanku further explained that this particular lecture topic “was selected in order to deliberate on the contemporary role of the media in bringing about social change.”
“The lecture will enable the University and public to learn from Mrs. Gabor's experiences while discussing how to make the media more relevant to the lives of people in a fast-changing world,” the communication analyst and senior lecturer stressed.
The event is open to academics, media members, students, and the general public. It is one of the many public lectures UniMAC-GIJ has lined up for the year in its quest to shape and contribute to public discourse.
