The Member of Parliament for Gushegu, Hassan Tampuli, has called for the performance of students in district's senior high school in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) to be improved.
He said out of the over 700 students of the Gushegu Senior High School who sat for last year’s WASSCE, only one student passed, adding that the situation is not different this year.
“WASSCE results have been released, Gushegu Senior High School, do you know the percentage of those who passed, last year out of the seven hundred and something who wrote only one person passed, it has not changed why?” he questioned.
Mr Tampuli said there is a need for a change in the statistics produced from the Northern Region in the various certificate examinations.
“It’s not only Gushegu, the whole of the Northern Region the results were bad, what is the reason? Students don’t go to school, they are riding mapuka in town or they are at betway and internet fraud,” he said.
Mr Tampuli raised this concern when he presented support to students in his constituency for the second time running, in fulfillment of his campaign to support students with scholarships. A total of 130 students each received between GHC800 and GHC1,000 as support for their fees.
He also raised concerns over bleaching by female students in the area.
“One time I visited the school and I noticed all the girls were fair. Fair-coloured people, not knowing they were all bleaching, you are still students who are you bleaching to show to?” he asked.
Mr Tampuli called for the organization of extra classes and other activities to improve the performance of students in the region.
The MP also cut sod for the commencement of work on the Zinindo to Yoligu road. This is to open up economic activities between the people of Gushegu, Savelugu and Karaga.
Speaking at the event, the Gushegu MP said the road, when done would also offer access roads to farmers to transport their product, adding that most of the farms are around the area where the road would be constructed.
“It’s going to create a direct link to the farms for the people, more of the farms are in those areas. There is a very big bridge over there that is a stumbling block, but that would soon be a thing of the past,” he stated.
He said the road would not only bring economic and agricultural benefits but also health benefits, because it will open up the place to two major health centers in the area.
Mr Tampuli said as part of the road project, the Zinindo Market would be constructed within the next six months. He promised electrification project in some communities would also soon commence.
He said the NPP government and his good self would continue to develop the area. Mr Tampuli also cut sod for the construction of the new Kpatinga Senior High School.
