On Thursday 22nd December 2022, Ghana, Africa and the rest of the world will say Farewell to one of the most distinguished men who passed this earth.
In line with his own written wishes, there will be ’no wake-keeping’, ’no one-week’, ‘no mourning’, ‘no prescribed dress-code’ at his burial service; and just a ‘private burial’.
Joining his ancestors at age 80, and having accomplished so much as a law professor, a revolutionary to the core, a brilliant scholar, Ghana’s longest-serving Finance Minister, a perfect gentleman, selfless and approachable, a pan Africanist, survived by three well-educated children and a partner, KB is sending a message: make your mark on this earth while you live and depart without any fanfare.
Make an impact on fellow human beings and strive to make society better than you found it.
Life should be celebrated, as he is saying. Why waste resources that can be used to save more lives ?
In his 80 years on earth, Kwesi saw all the corners of the world and believed that the African deserved to live a better life. Before settling in Ghana, he worked in various capacities in Tanzania, Zambia, USA and South Africa with movements and organizations that advocated positive change in society.
One of his many friends was Walter Rodney who shook the world with his publication “How Europe Underdeveloped Africa”. And his influence on Ghana’s economic landscape was enormous. Without a doubt, Kwesi Botchwey is leaving footprints in more ways than can be described in a short tribute.
Those footprints will generate impacts across generations.
KB, RIP !
