Over 1,000 flood victims in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region have received relief items worth GHȼ145,000 from the Lions Club International.
According to the Lions Club, they were touched by the plight of the victims and decided to support them in their period of recovery.
Hundreds of flood victims in the Ga South municipality made a passionate appeal to the government for food and basic essentials as their houses were submerged in flood waters.
According to them, they had been starving after losing their sources of livelihood and properties to the flood that had displaced more than 1,000 people in the Tetegu, Ashalaja, Weija, and Oblogo areas.

For three days, the flood victims said they had remained out of their homes, with some killing their livestock and other animals they laid hands on to survive.

Speaking at a brief ceremony to hand over the relief items to the victims, District Governor of the Lions Club, Emmanuel Gyimah, revealed that out of the GHȼ145,000 the club donated, the mother club supported the Ghana District with $10,000 dollars while members of the club in Ghana also contributed the rest of the amount.

Emmanuel Gyimah further indicated that they were touched after seeing people struggling to survive after their houses flooded.

After the donation, the district governor of the Lions Club charged residents in the flood prone area to find a way to move to higher ground rather than wait for their houses to be flooded before crying for help. He also appealed to the government to find a lasting solution to the Weija Flood to save lives and property.

Meanwhile, the Ga South Municipal National Disaster Management Organization's director, Christian Afiadenyo, expressed shock after seeing the quantity of relief items from the organization. He thanked them for their support.

Furthermore, some of the beneficiaries of the gesture commended the Lions Club for putting a smile on their faces this Christmas season.

The packaged items include rice, cooking oil, toilet rolls and water.
