The three teacher unions who have been on strike for the past seven days in protest against the appointment of the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Dr Eric Nkansah, have called off the strike.
This comes minutes after the National Labour Commission (NLC) secured a restraining order against the teacher Unions from continuing with their strike.
Speaking to the media on behalf of the unions, the President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers - NAGRAT, Angel Kabonu directed all teachers to go back to the classroom from Monday, November 14, 2022, until further notice.
“We are law-abiding citizens, so we have decided to obey the orders of the Court, and we have asked all our members to call off the strike and to go back to the classroom,” he said.
Mr. Kabonu maintained that they will continue engaging “the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, and report to the Labour Commission on Wednesday, November 16, on the issues that led to the strike in the first place to find solutions to their demand.”
The three teacher unions – Ghana National Association of Teachers, the National Association of Graduate Teachers, and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, on Friday, November 4, 2022, declared a nationwide strike over the appointment of Dr. Eric Nkansah as the Director-General (D-G) of the Ghana Education Service (GES).
The group also kicked against the extension of the contract of Lawyer Anthony Boateng for the third time as Deputy Director-General, calling it ‘unacceptable.
