University of Ghana sprint athlete, Abdul-Rasheed Saminu has won gold in the 100m men's final at the 2022 GUSA games.
Saminu crossed the finish line with a time of 10.26s to surpass the time of 10.60s run by 2020's champion, Benjamin Azamati. Saminu also run a time of 10.31s to finish ahead of University of Development Studies' Barnabas Agerh in Heat 2 of the event.
Saminu represented Ghana in the 4x100m relay at the 2022 Birmingham Games, where he helped Ghana to a final slot before the team's disqualification due to technical faults.
Prior to the 100m heats of the GUSA games, the promising sprint athlete with a personal best of 10.31s, indicated to JoySports he was not focused on taking down his, but instead, GUSA's 100m record.
“I am just targeting the GUSA 100m record, 10.25s and I’m just preparing towards it. My colleagues are also preparing because it is going to be fire, we are just ready to face whatever is coming.”
While he set a new personal best in the event, Saminu narrowly missed out on GUSA's record, but refused to let it water down on his excitement.
“I am excited to follow in the footsteps of my compatriot Benjamin Azamati in this event at the GUSA level. Winning gold and making my personal best as well is a dream come true. I had a tough test from Agerh of UDS and my team mate Solomon. I will continue to work hard to achieve my target of sub 10,” Saminu told University of Ghana's Sports Directorate after the final.
The focus now shifts to the 200m event for the 20-year-old, who after running a time of 21.58s at the 2019 African Junior Championships held in Cot d'Ivoire, recorded a new PB of 21.32s at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
That was only the second time Saminu run the event on a competitive level of that nature.
