The Environment Ministry has revealed that government has initiated plans to partner with some car assembling plants in the country, to scale up the production of electric vehicles.

According to the Ministry, the initiative is to reduce the use of carbon-emission vehicles and their effect on climate change.

Chief Director at the ministry, Cynthia Asare-Bediako said this in an interview with JoyNews on the sidelines of the 9th Regional Conference of the Global Initiative for West, Central, and Southern Africa - GI WACAF in Accra, to deliberate on the region’s preparedness in tackling oil spillage.

“Some steps have been taken where we are seeing how best we can collaborate with the car manufacturing companies on the production of electric cars.

“I think there are few that have been piloted even in Ghana,” she said on Tuesday.

Madam Asare-Bediako further noted that the educational curriculum of students are being revised to align with this new vision.

“With the recent change and the reorganisation of our education system, we are also having the TVET where these school children are being prepared to learn how to either manufacture, maintain and repair electric vehicles because we will be producing them very soon,” she explained.

She was, therefore, optimistic that soon enough, electric vehicles will be the dominant means of transport in the country.
