The World Health Organization (WHO) has revealed an estimated 2.2 billion people around the globe suffer from some form of visual impairment or blindness.
As part of this year’s World Sight Day, Lions Club International, District 418, screened about 500 residents at Suame Magazine in the Ashanti Region.
According to Lion Nehemiah Senyo Attigah, the screening is to help residents maintain optimal eye health.
"Some people in deprived communities do not really go for eye screening to know their vision status and that was why we organised this mini clinic. As Lion's, our primary objective is to serve communities and our primary global course is actually sight," he said.
Majority of the people screened reported cases of ocular allergies which is an itchy eye condition that makes affected persons rub their eyes excessively.
Affected persons received on-site spectacle tests and eye glasses to aid their vision.
"We're giving them free medication that will be best for their eyes. We consistently do the screening in every region, we don't wait to organise the screening yearly," Lion Deloris Enyo Awalime, a member of the team, noted.
Diabetes and blood pressure patients also benefited from the mini clinic by Lions Club International, District 418.
Vision Spring, Ernest Chemist, Remy Pharmacy, Suame Municipal Assembly and the Ghana National Association of Garages supported this year’s mini clinic.
